Most people associate hip alpine Queenstown with adrenaline-fuelled pursuits; it is home to the first ever bungee jump after all, thanks to A.J. Hackett. However, for some of us (me) who are looking to not throw ourselves off a bridge, I have found the perfect past time to get an eyeful of the beautiful scenery whilst at the same time feel completely and 100% relaxed.
Enter into the Onsen Hot Pools…
This place is an instagrammers dream and is where I actually first came across this little beauty. Once I had found it, I knew I had to book it for part of our honeymoon trip in Queenstown.
You can book hourly slots for your own private onsen pool overlooking the Shotover river and the surrounding mountains. For those special occasions you can book their champagne and chocolates package, however seeing as we were the first booking of the day we stuck to some good old-fashioned New Zealand H2O.
From the moment I called up to book, to arriving a little early the staff were very welcoming and took time to find out how our trip was going and what else we were up to that day. Thanks guys!
If you are early don’t worry as there is a lovely reception/lounge area you can chill in before and after your onsen. You can also bring your own towels or hire them there for a couple of dollars extra. There are shower facilities there to use afterwards too.
Once we had been shown our private indoor/outdoor onsen, we put on our swimmies and hopped right into the steaming mountain water. You can convert your experience to an outdoor onsen by retracting the picture windows so one side of the room is completely open to nature. If you haven’t tried one before, then find your nearest one right now (or book a trip to Queenstown!) the feeling of your muscles physically relaxing is sooooo goooood, and it is extra special when you are surrounded by the stunning scenery of New Zealand.
I loved our experience here and will definitely come back when I visit Queenstown again in the future.
