These days everyone seems to be enthralled with their skin care regime, often researching and scouring the market for the best products for their skin type. However, no one (I speak to) talks about skin care for the scalp and frequenting the salon for a hair spa treatment. Well, I know I haven’t thought of this before but having now spent some time ruminating on this, it makes total sense to me to start thinking about the skin on top of my head too, which in turn links to healthy hair.
Pregnancy and post birth hormone irregularity can cause real problems for our hair. What was once lush thick locks during pregnancy for some can turn into thinning and limp hair once your little one has arrived.
I’ll admit I spend a lot of money on my hair having it colored and cut a specific way and I always think twice about trying out a new hair dresser. But why haven’t I thought about my scalp too in all of this?
I was lucky to be invited to try out J Salon’s Hair Spa treatment at their luxurious spa in River Valley. One morning I set off for a couple of hours of “me” time and to really treat myself with this luxe treatment.
The salon uses one of my favourite brands, Kerastase for all of their haircare services along with L’Oreal for their hair colours.
On arriving at the salon I was greeted with a friendly smile and escorted through the bright open plan salon to the lounge area, admiring the green leafy views over the Singapore River and River Valley as I passed through.
Here I had my very first hair and scalp consultation where I discovered things about my hair that I never knew! Using his clever little magnifying device my haircare consultant, James could see straight through to my scalp and inspect my hair follicles… first time a man’s ever done that!!
James told me that typically healthy hair has 3-6 hairs growing out of each pore, yet I was surprised to find out that some of mine only contained two. He also told me lots of interesting facts about how the hair follicles can get blocked with product and the importance of allowing nutrients to get into each pore.
After changing into a soft robe, I walked the short distance into the tranquil hair spa treatment room and sank into my comfy arm chair in front of a floor to ceiling window overlooking the reflections of the high rise in the ripples of the Singapore river winding all the way down to the CBD. With the soft piano music and the sound of waves lapping at the shore on the sound system it was easy to unwind, forget about work and enjoy the scent of lavender essential oil helping me to switch off from daily life.
Knowing I had given birth a year ago, my lovely therapist told me she could amend the treatment to suit ladies who are expecting and not able to sit for too long to make it more comfortable for them with their growing bumps.
The hair spa treatment lasted two hours in total and included two neck, shoulder and back massages, a hand and arm massage, thorough washing of the hair twice and multiple treatments including a Kerastase tonic sprayed on using oxygen so it is cooling on the scalp. This was followed by Chromotherapy where a head massager tool emitted a blue soothing light and red stimulating light to encourage hair growth.
After all this I had the pleasure of a beautifully bouncy blow dry and I left feeling truly relaxed and recharged.
Finding time to treat yourself when you have children is hard! But if by some chance you have child care, a couple of hours to spare and are in need of some “mama me time” then I would highly recommend this treatment.
