Living the expat life, Christmas is the one time of the year there is a mass exodus out of Singapore scattering expats all over the world back to their homelands. This usually involves a long haul flight and for those of us mere mortals, who won’t be getting horizontal in business or first class, steps need to be put in place to ensure some form of comfort.
Here are my top tips for making your long haul flight just that bit more comfy.
Stay hydrated during the flight by drinking lots of water, I always take my own large water bottle on long haul flights now which I can keep filling up instead of bothering the airline staff for their thimble sized cups of water!
Layers are important for long flights especially at Christmas time and you are flying from a hot to a cold climate or vice versa. Jumpers and jackets you can easily access are a great way to stay comfortable before, during and after the flight.
What to wear…
I always take a comfortable pair of yoga pants and a jumper to travel in to make sure I am as comfortable as possible, wear what works for you but always remember warm socks to wear over those sexy flight socks.
Flight socks won’t necessarily help make the flight more comfortable but they will help reduce the cankles at the other end and any discomfort mid flight.
Fly legs up
Research into nifty gadgets that help during flights, such as the Fly legs up hammock for your legs. This gadget attaches to the tray table arms and allows you to have your legs in many different positions to alleviate the pressure in your lower legs. It is also a godsend for side sleepers with it’s ability to support your knees and keep your legs raised off the floor.
For crying out loud
Talking of sleep, remember to pack ear plugs to drown out any background noise (read snoring, kids crying or incessant chatter) and also an eye mask especially if the person next to you has the eye of sauron … sorry, spot light on the entire flight.
Invest in a good set of cushioned headphones, the airplane ones are dreadful. My favourite are from Bose.
There is something so unhealthy and unappetising about airplane food so to combat this I always try to eat a proper dinner before I fly and then pack some homemade food to eat instead.
