If you’ve been a reader for awhile now you will know that I am a real lover of discovering new brands, especially if they are designing products that stand out from the crowd. Recently I discovered statement jewellery brand Twin Within and instantly became hooked on their minimalist and edgy designs.
Designer, Kristin originally hails from Iceland and it is on those cold and scenic shores Twin Within blossomed to life. Kristin’s designs were born from a love for finding beauty in the mundane and blending feminine and masculine influences.
Founded in 2013 Kristin began creating her signature necklace designs herself at home and on moving to Singapore decided to scale up her business and look for artisans to create her designs.
Thankfully Kristin did move to Singapore, as this is how I first came across her brand. The way she uses raw materials such as fishing rope and rubber cables to make such chic necklaces is genius. What is special about these necklaces, aside from their unique designs, is that they accessorise pretty much every style of outfit; they work with a casual tee and jeans to a LBD.
The key to these designs is to try them on as I found they took on a different look and feel once they were on my body. So I took a selection of Kristin’s designs on a trip to the National Gallery and paired them with a black Broderie anglaise co-ord from Jasper Living, another of my favourite local brands.
Lightweight and striking, I love how each of the necklaces look on both skin and material.
Knowing where Kristin gets each piece made is an intrinsic part of the Twin Within brand. As an ambassador for slow fashion and ethical production, Kristin took a long time finding and organizing the right organization to manufacture her designs. She decided upon a village in the Phillippines, associated with the charity organization Focolare, who help to provide job opportunities for disadvantaged women. She now also helps support a community in Bali to craft her metal detailing.
Meeting Kristin and hearing about her socially conscious business and personal way of life was very inspiring and certainly one I aim to aspire to.
